How to stay safe when a vehicle breaks down

On Behalf of | Oct 29, 2023 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Most drivers in Tennessee will likely experience a mechanical breakdown of their vehicle at some point in their driving career. Being stranded on the shoulder of a busy highway is dangerous. In order to prevent an accident, it’s important to know what to do in the event of a vehicle breakdown.

Pull over

Pull over as soon as it becomes evident that there’s a problem with the vehicle. Make sure the vehicle is safely off the road and turn on the hazard lights. The hazard lights will alert officers and other drivers that the vehicle is disabled. If it is not possible to get the vehicle off the road, do not get out and attempt to push it.

Call for help

Once the hazards are on and the vehicle is safely off the road, determine who to call for help. Roadside services are available in most parts of the country and may be able to assist. If it is an emergency, call 9-1-1. After calling for help, stay in the vehicle if traffic is present until help arrives. Most breakdown injuries happen when drivers exit their vehicles in an unsafe environment.

Help in the aftermath of an accident

The best way to stay safe when a breakdown happens is to be prepared. Keep an emergency kit in the vehicle that contains first-aid, flashlights and jumper cables. Be sure to save phone numbers for roadside assistance services. However, should an accident occur, there are options available for help. When the negligence of another party contributes to injuries, victims in Tennessee can speak with an experienced personal injury attorney about filing a claim.
